“Searching for Augusta: The Forgotten Angel of Bastogne” uncovers the extraordinary story of Augusta Chiwy, a Congolese-born Belgian nurse who saved countless lives during the 1944-1945 Battle of the Bulge, working tirelessly under relentless bombardment alongside American medic Jack Prior despite racial prejudices that barred black nurses from treating white soldiers. Inspired by a brief mention in “Band of Brothers,” military historian Martin King spent years battling bureaucratic resistance to locate Chiwy, who had faded into obscurity, ultimately securing her belated recognition from the U.S. Army and Belgian government shortly before her death in 2015. Drawing from Prior’s recently discovered diary and King’s exhaustive research, this poignant film ensures that the “Angel of Bastogne’s” legacy of compassion and sacrifice endures as a powerful tribute to a forgotten hero of history.

On April 13, 1945, American soldiers from the 30th Infantry Division discovered an abandoned Nazi transport train near Farsleben, Germany, carrying over 2,500 starving Jewish prisoners from Bergen-Belsen concentration camp—a moment of liberation captured in an iconic photograph that would fade into obscurity for decades. This documentary tells the remarkable story of how high school teacher Matthew Rozell uncovered this forgotten act of compassion in 2001, leading to his 2016 book and emotional reunions between survivors and their liberators across three continents. Through eyewitness accounts, archival photographs, and newly discovered footage, the film illuminates a lesser-known chapter of WWII history, celebrating both the soldiers’ humanity and the survivors’ resilience while serving as a powerful reminder of kindness’s enduring impact against unimaginable evil.
